Current Inventory

The Galerie St. Etienne stocks a complete selection of Sue Coe prints, and roughly 100 original paintings and drawings. Prints range in price from $40.00 to $2,000.00, and original drawings and paintings start at around $1,000. Mixed media drawings 29" x 23" range in price from $3,500 to $6,000; those 30" x 40" range from $6,000 to $12,000. Exceptionally large works cost more, as do some early pieces. The majority of Sue Coe's work is executed in mixed media on paper, but a few oil paintings (most done in the 1980s) are available.

In the tradition of such socially oriented German artists as George Grosz, Otto Dix and Käthe Kollwitz, Sue Coe has long used printmaking as a means of political consciousness raising. She deliberately keeps her print prices low, in order to reach the broadest possible audience. Sales proceeds from certain print editions are earmarked for causes that Coe believes in.

Because Sue Coe has her editions printed gradually over time, the final edition size cannot be determined until the plate wears out and is canceled. For this reason, Coe's prints are not numbered. She and her printer, Steve Murray, estimate each edition size in advance, and this estimate is given to all prospective purchasers. The final edition size is made available once an edition is completed.

Original Drawings and Paintings

Sue Coe is primarly interested in exploring and revealing realities that are often concealed from general view. She functions almost like an investigative journalist, infiltrating closed environments such as slauighterhouses and then reporting back to the outside world. She believes that she can effect social change simply by bearing witness. While the majority of Coe's work is descriptive, she also creates pieces that are more overtly polemical, in the tradition of such role models as Käthe Kollwtiz and George Grosz. Like the German artist Max Klinger, Coe believes that color is inimical to strong content, and so she uses color sparingly. Most of her original works are executed in a mixture of graphite, gouache and acrylic on paper.
